Cleanup continues after the Amtrak train and vehicle collision in New Buffalo Township Thursday night.

The incident happened around 10 p.m.

A disabled vehicle was stuck on the railroad tracks at the Lakeside Road crossing and was in the process of being removed by a tow truck when a westbound Amtrak train collided with the vehicles. The train derailed but stayed upright.

The engineer and about 10 passengers suffered non-life threatening injuries and were treated locally. There were approximately 200 passengers on the train that were evacuated safely but then had to be bused to Chicago.

The Amtrak train schedule has been disrupted and Lakeside Road is completely closed to through traffic between Kruger Road and US-12 to facilitate repairs. Amtrak is still working on the railroad and train. The road there is closed until further notice with a marked detour.

The incident remains under investigation.
