High school athletes all over Berrien County will be hearing in the next week week from pastor and motivational speaker Taurus Montgomery.
Montgomery is the pastor of Harbor Hope Church in Benton Harbor and a former student athlete himself. He tells us he made mistakes as a youth that harmed his athletic career, and now he works to help young people avoid the same kinds of mistakes through the ASAP Challenge, or Athletes Success Acceleration Project.
“My desire is to be able to provide training for student athletes as early as possible, and I think that high school age is a good age to start, so my desire is to equip them with the necessary character and leadership education and skills they need is what gave birth to this initiative,” Montgomery said.
Montgomery is bringing the ASAP Challenge to Benton Harbor High School Thursday. After that, he’ll be visiting St. Joseph, Lakeshore, Watervliet, Brandywine, and the Andrews Academy over the next week.
Montgomery says he talks to the students about processing adversity and not allowing circumstances to affect their chance of success.
The program is supported with a grant from the Berrien Community Foundation.
