As the U.S. House geared up to vote to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his position Tuesday, Congressman Tim Walberg stood behind the Speaker.
Walberg told us he saw no reason to remove McCarthy, and in fact, saw plenty of reasons to support him.
“I think he’s done a fabulous job in light of the fact that he has had a very, very small majority to work with, and several of those right from the get-go, as we’re finding out, were hoping for a small majority so they could force the Speaker’s hand in ways that would go against the rest of the conference.”
Walberg says a small handful of members have been opposing budget deals worked out by McCarthy because they didn’t meet unrealistic demands.
“I would love to get basically everything that those members are wanting to get, and I’ve said so in conference. I’m willing to vote for any of that, and maybe even more. As conservative as you want to go. But I also deal in reality, that we’re not going to get all of that.”
Walberg says McCarthy has helped Republicans get several wins this year, and the caucus should be building on those wins rather than sowing chaos. He adds McCarthy’s opponents haven’t been able to present a better option than McCarthy.
Congressman Bill Huizenga agreed, voting not to remove McCarthy Tuesday. Nevertheless, McCarthy was removed in a close vote.
