Kale Dwight Burks, an adventurous spirit and witty conversationalist, was born on July 24, 1985, in Metairie, Louisiana. His zest for life and empathetic nature was felt by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. Kale was a steadfast and loving friend, a loyal New Orleans Saints fan, and an avid reader who enjoyed sharing his favorite books with others. As Mark Twain once said, “The secret of success is making your vocation your vacation.” Kale embodied this sentiment throughout his career as an ironworker, a profession he dedicated 15 years of his life to, working for Local 292.
Kale was a lifelong learner, always seeking to broaden his horizons and deepen his understanding of the world. His travels as an ironworker allowed him to connect with a wide array of people across various places, but he held a special fondness for Louisiana, a place deeply embedded in his family roots and a home to his beloved Saints. He had a great love for Louisiana cuisine, especially seafood, which he enjoyed sharing with his family and friends.
Above all, the role Kale cherished most was being an uncle. Affectionately known as “Uncle Ale” to his nieces Stella Jean and Millie Mae, his love for them was profound and unwavering.
He is survived by his loving mother, Heidi Burks, and his sister, Hayley (TJ) Sater, as well as his best friend, Dustin Green, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his father Dwight Burks, his grandparents Nedra Sebalj, Jim Ott, Reginald Burks, and Betty Burks, and his uncle James Ott.
Kale’s life will be celebrated on Friday, September 15, 2023, from 5:00-7:00 pm at the American Legion, located at 403 East Front Street, Buchanan, Michigan. In Lieu of flowers, please make donations in Kale’s name to the Buchanan District Library.
