It is with a twinkle in our eyes that we celebrate the life of Victor “Vic” Ernest Backus, who took off on his final road trip on August 12, 2023. Born in Niles, MI, on March 28, 1951, Victor was a lifelong resident of Buchanan, Michigan, a town that was as steadfast and dedicated as him. A loving husband, a generous father, and an undeniably funny character, Victor’s life was a delightful journey filled with laughter and love.

Victor was a truck driver by trade, but his true passion was being a devoted husband to Mary, his wife of 49 years. Together, they painted the town red at the casino, danced like no one was watching, and sang like they were the only ones in the room. Victor was an avid Michigan football and Chicago Cubs fan, and he could often be found cheering on his teams with unmatched enthusiasm. True to his generous nature, he always made certain everyone around him was having as much fun as he was. As Mark Twain once said, “The secret of success is making your vocation your vacation.” Victor embodied this fully, making every day a joy for those around him.

Remembered as a dedicated, loving, and funny man, Victor leaves behind a legacy of laughter and love. He is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Robert Harris (Kerri Pettie), Felicia (Stephen) Lentsch, Victor Backus III, and Crystal (James) Kehoe; his grandkids, MaKenna Harris, Ethan Lentsch, Korrina Lentsch, Alaina Kehoe, and Finley Kehoe; and his sister, Janice Leiter. He now joins his parents, Victor and Phyllis Backus, and his brother, Richard Backus, on that great highway in the sky.

As we say our goodbyes, we remember the words of Dr. Seuss, “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” Victor’s life was a grand adventure filled with laughter, love, and an unwavering dedication to his family. As we remember Victor, let’s keep the spirit of his joy alive. We encourage everyone to share their memories, stories, and photos on his memorial page. Through these shared remembrances, Victor’s legacy will continue to bring smiles to our faces and warmth to our hearts.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan.
