The St. Joseph Township Police Department is getting a new drone. Chief Randy Leng tells us a group of local businesses and residents made donations to make the purchase possible. He says the current drone is about five years old and has been used for a variety of operations.
“We use it for search and rescue, we use it for training, we use it at township functions like National Night Out, those kinds of events, and we use it to track suspects,” Leng said. “There are a lot of uses for drones that the general public might not be aware of, but we do put it up quite often.”
However, Leng says the new drones allow for even more. With the new purchase, the department will be able to fly in all kinds of weather conditions and get better photos. The price is coming in around $14,000. Leng says they hope to have the new drove in time for the annual National Night Out on August 1.
