Michigan’s new distracted driving law goes into effect Friday. You will no longer be allowed to hold a cell phone in your hand to talk, text, watch videos, or go on social media. Michigan Auto Law COO Brandon Hewitt says there were 16,000 distracted driving crashes in Michigan in 2021.
“What the point is here is that they’re trying to take the phone out of your hands,” Hewitt said. “Yes, for older cars, it’s going to be a little bit more cumbersome, but you can go on Amazon and buy one of those stands that you see in your Uber driver’s car and put your phone on your dash or your center console.”
Hewitt says the law creates a dangerous loophole that allows drivers who are using their cell phones hands free to still text, talk, and watch videos on the phone while they’re driving. The fine for a first violation is $100 dollars with a second violation costing $200 to $250 dollars, plus community service.
