Police investigate apartment fire in Benton Harbor

The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety is asking the public for information about a fire at COGIC Village Apartments on Tuesday. It says firefighters were sent to the complex at 1942 Territorial shortly before 7 p.m. on a report of a couch fire on a patio. They arrived to find a heavy fire on the first and second floors, and also in the attic of the two story building. The fire was contained to two apartments, with both being a total loss. Six additional apartments took smoke and water damage with the total estimated damage at $750,000. Two people were taken by ambulance to the hospital to be treated for medical complications not caused by the fire, while one dog was killed in the fire. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety.
