Slotkin making gun reform key issue in Senate campaign

Michigan’s legislature continues to work on gun laws following the mass shooting on the Michigan State University campus in February. Congresswoman and Senate candidate Elissa Slotkin spoke over the weekend about what lies ahead when trying to tame gun violence.

“We have to decide as a country if we care about the number one killer of children under 21,”Slotkin said. “We can debate about what law makes the most sense, but let’s decide we’re going to do something about it, like we did in the 80s, when car accidents were the number one killer of children. There were no car seats, there were no seatbelts. We made a decision as a society to study it, to understand it, and to go after it, both in law and also in our culture.”

Slotkin has jumped to the forefront of the debate on gun control as she ramps up her campaign to replace outgoing Senator Debbie Stabenow. She’s made gun reform one of her key issues.
