A roundtable discussion on the southwest Michigan housing market will take place at Lake Michigan College Wednesday. Dr. Erik Mortenson with the LMC English faculty tells us “The Future of Housing: Where Will You Live in 20 Years?” will explore housing affordability and sustainability. He notes there is an affordable housing crunch in the region.

“We have a lot of pressures,” Mortenson said. “There’s a rental market. Especially in South Haven, I hear, there’s something of a problem for some people to get housing year-round. We also have people coming in from outside the area with vacation homes. We live in a very desirable area, which is good, but it creates some tensions and the problems in terms of making sure everybody has a nice place to live.”

On hand Wednesday will be a planning and zoning official from Indiana, a representative of a construction company, an Andrews University Architecture professor, and the legislative director for state Representative Joey Andrews. The roundtable is open to the public and is at 1 p.m. in Room L-311 on the LMC Benton Harbor Campus. You can also attend via Zoom.
