False threat reported at Benton Harbor High School

Benton Harbor High School was among the schools across Michigan Tuesday to be affected by a rash of bogus calls to police reporting shootings. Michigan State Police say law enforcement agencies all over Michigan reported hearing from a caller who claimed to be a teacher at a particular school and reporting a student had shot another student. The caller would also give a room number. The calls were all fake.

Benton Harbor Area Schools reported the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety also received notice of a direct threat to the school Tuesday morning. The high school then enacted its emergency protocols and went into lockdown. The district says it “resumed operation after our investigation concluded that students and staff were safe and were not found to be in any imminent danger.” It says it’s now working with police as the fake threat “was one of a number of reported calls across the state directed at schools.” Similar incidents on Tuesday were reported in Portage, Battle Creek, Harper Creek, and Okemos.
