Who’s the greatest singer of all time? According to a list compiled by Rolling Stone, it’s Detroit’s own Aretha Franklin. Music journalist Gary Graff says Franklin deserves to be on top of the list.

“Just her range and her technique combined with her passion. She had all the ingredients of what makes a great singer, and she was a songwriter, too,” says Graff. “I’ve always felt that the greatest singers, I feel, are often songwriters as well.”

Graff says Michigan was well represented on the list with Stevie Wonder at number 7, Smokey Robinson at 23, Diana Ross at number 87, and Martha Reeves at 151.
