A beloved breakfast spot downtown St. Joseph is set to return before the end of the year.

Thornton’s Home Town Café, 613 Pleasant Street, has been sold, according to a post on its Facebook page. New owners have yet to be announced, but the post said they have plans to reopen the café on Dec. 1.

It is unknown at this time what changes will be in store for the restaurant, and the Facebook post said to stay tuned for updates. Thornton’s did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Thornton’s closed its doors on July 31, after an announcement by Owner Kathy Thornton on Facebook. After an outpouring of response from its customers, Thornton thanked the community.

“Farewell, St. Joe and surrounding communities,” she said, in a post. “We have enjoyed serving you for the past 20+ years. The outpouring of love in the past few weeks has been overwhelming. We will never forget any of you!! Thank you for your support and friendship!”

Thornton said there were numerous factors behind her decision to close the restaurant after 20 and a half years, but a shortage of staff was big among them. She said it was just too difficult to find people, and thought she would bow out while on top.

Until the reopening, former customers are left wondering if their favorite menu items will remain on the menu.
