Local travelers will no longer have direct access to one major airline hub when flying out of South Bend.
The South Bend International airport announced this week Delta airlines will no longer offer service from South Bend to Detroit, effective November 9.
“The aviation industry ,” said Mike Daigle, CEO and Executive Director for South Bend International Airport. “While no airport wants to receive news of a service reduction, we are not surprised by Delta’s decision to pull back the Detroit route.
In an interview with WNDU, South Bend Regional Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jeff Rea said he often flies Delta through Detroit on his way to the east coast, and couldn’t recall there being a time when there was not a Detroit flight out of South Bend.
“The airlines are going to focus on places where they can maximize their dollars,” Rea said. “That’s a potential downside for smaller airports … like ours.”
South Bend passengers can still travel with Delta through their hubs in Atlanta and Minneapolis.
