Upton Reflects On Televised January 6 Hearing

Congressman Fred Upton was among those to watch the first in a series of primetime, televised hearings into the January 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol riot Thursday. He was in Washington the day an angry mob stormed the U.S. Senate as it tried to certify the 2020 presidential election result. Upton told us after watching the hearing the central problem is some people don’t believe Donald Trump lost.

“He did lose,” Upton said. “The voters made a decision. They didn’t come back with evidence [of fraud]. They said last night there were 60 court battles, and they’ve lost all 60 of them. There’s not the evidence there, but yes. A good number of people still think the election was stolen.”

Upton says there will be those who refuse to accept the result, but he believes the hearings will make a difference.

“Some will say that it’s false, they won’t watch it, they won’t see the evidence, but at the end of the day when this is over, we’ll see where it goes. I don’t know what they’re going to present, either last night or in the days ahead, but it’s going to have an impact.”

Upton says he knows some of the Capitol police officers who were able to slow down the mob long enough for members of Congress to escape. He was asked by the press if he would join the select committee investigating the Capitol riot, but says he simply didn’t want to. More hearings will be held on June 13, 15, 16, 21, and 23.
