John H. Paxton, 74, of Dowagiac, passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2022, at his home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Clark Chapel.

A Celebration of Life Homegoing will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2022, at 12:00 PM at Apostolic Lighthouse Church, 30402 M-62, Dowagiac with Pastor Bryant Bacon officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Friday, June 3, from 5:00PM until 7:00PM at Clark Chapel 405 Center, St. Dowagiac and again at 11:00AM Saturday, until the time of service at the church. Memorial contributions in John’s name may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at www.clarkch.com.

John was born September 14, 1947, in Dowagiac to Glanton and Jane (Scisco)Paxton Sr. He attended Dowagiac High School. After high school, John joined the United States Army. He was a two tour Vietnam Veteran and received a Purple Heart for his gallant service, and was honorably discharged in 1971. After returning from Vietnam, John obtained his barber’s license. He’s always been known for his immaculate dress which includes his hair.

John was formerly employed at Clark’s Equipment. He was also a welder for AM General for many years. John had many joys in life, but family was most important to him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his children, John D. Paxton (Malinda)), Jai (Laura) Paxton, Patrice Paxton-Shelton, Tyrek Paxton and Lori Hunt; grandchildren Angela, Michel, Dejuan, Jonelle, Aiyana, Gia, DJ and Jamin; 14 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter. siblings-Glanton Paxton Jr., Patricia Paxton, Henry Scisco, Michelle Scisco, Ricky Bryant, Roy Bryant, Ida (Frank) Robinson, Sheila (George) Huff, & Gina Gates; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. “Johnnie” also leaves to mourn a very special, committed, lifelong friend, Don Brown. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Billy Paxton; siblings; Sara Ann and Billy; and Queenie Simpson.
