Sylvia Jean Hall was born Oct. 4, 1945, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Bert Sr. and Geraldine (Day) Sturgeon. Sylvia passed away, at the age of 76, at her home in Coloma, on Friday, April 29, 2022.
Sylvia was a care giver for the elderly, taking care of numerous patients. She was a long time member of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians and attended many of the pow wow’s. She regularly attended the Road of Life Church, enjoyed doing Pokemon puzzles, did many things to help others, but most of all, gathering the entire family for cookouts.
The family received friends from 1-2 p.m., on Tuesday, May 3 at the Calvin Funeral Home, where a celebration of life and a traditional Native American service to honor Sylvia’s memory followed. Pastor Mike Schoeplein of the Road to Life Church of Saint Joseph officiated, along with Kevin Daugherty, performing the traditional service. Sylvia was laid to rest at Rush Lake Indian Cemetery in Hartford Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family to help cover the cost of a marker. Sylvia is survived by her husband; Gary; five children: Thomas (Shelly) Sturgeon, Bert (Anita) Wilbur, Sara (the late Scottie Sliter) Wilbur, Terry Fields and Vincent Lee; thirteen grandchildren: David Heisel, Nick Easley, Casey Lee, Ashley Wilbur, Ryan Easley, Cody Sturgeon, James Wilbur, Cory Wilbur, Cain Wilbur, Nathan Sturgeon, Nakita Fields, Logan Fields and Caleb Lee; eighteen great-grandchildren; and nine siblings: Phillip Sturgeon, Louella Lewis, Ronald Sturgeon, Marjorie Young, Thomas Sturgeon, Adeline Dixon, Otis Lewis, Peggy McNew and Marcia Dunn.
