James L. Covey, 85, of Benton Township died Saturday, January 29, 2022, at the Hanson Hospice Center in Lincoln Township.

Services celebrating his life will be held at 1 PM on Thursday, February 3, at the Fairplain Chapel of Florin Funeral Service in Benton Township. The visitation will begin at 11 AM on Thursday at the Fairplain Chapel. Entombment will follow the service at North Shore Memory Gardens. Jim was born on August 6, 1936 in South Haven to Clayton and Henrietta Covey. He was a graduate of South Haven High School and completed several trade school programs. Jim was a veteran of the US Army during the Korean War and continued his service in the Michigan National Guard so that when he retired he had 25 years in the military. He married his wife, Donnie, in 1987 and together they have celebrated 35 years of marriage. He was a retired machinist who worked for Bohm Aluminum, Shepard Casters, Zenith and Lovejoy. Jim was employed for over 15 ½ years at Zenith. He enjoyed woodworking and everyone had something that he had made. Jim also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and golfing. He was a past president of the South County Chapter of the Gideons which he was involved with them for many years. Jim had a good personality who was determined to learn about anything he did not know.

His family includes his wife, Donnie; his children, Laura Maxie of FL, Debra Henry of MI, Donna (Steven) Lawson of Indianapolis, James Covey, Jr. of Beaverton, MI, Pamela Bradford of Grand Rapids, Donetta Crawford of Lapanto, AR, Teresa Johnson of Benton Harbor, and David (Malissa) Johnson of Niles; his daughter-in-law, Jane Covey of FL.; his siblings, Elaine (Kenneth) Warren of Benton Harbor, Joyce (Jim) Brewbaker of Fulton, MI., Gerald (Judith) Covey of Bangor, and Roger (Deloris) Covey of Miami, FL., his many grandchildren, his great grandchildren and his great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sons, Leslie in 1997 and Clayton in 2020, and 2 brothers, Kenneth and Larry.
