Have you ever thought about completely changing your lifestyle? That’s what a Ferndale couple is doing after running 227 miles this fall to raise money and awareness about the Line 3 pipeline that runs from Canada to Minnesota. Brandon Garlow, a Mohawk Native American, told Michigan News Network it cuts through indigenous reservations without the people’s permission and he and his wife have been raising money for their legal fund. In the process, he says they sold their house and decided to live in a tent in the forest in the Upper Peninsula.
“Ever since we’ve had our son, it’s made up realize if we keep living the way we do, there’s not going to be much left for our son and his kids and his grandkids,” Garlow said. “So, with that in mind, thinking about the next generations, we said what is the new way of being, what is the new way of living?”
Garlow says he and his wife Fiona have found a deep respect for nature, saying we’re more connected than they thought. He says they’re learning as they go and may build a homestead at some point.
