Endangered Species Found At Construction Site In Vicksburg

There’s been a big find in southwest Michigan as the Mill at Vicksburg is being redeveloped into a mixed use project in southwest Michigan. Paper City Development COO, Jackie Koney, says some scientists came out and investigated the nearby Portage Creek.

“As they were investigating, they came across in the very last scoop of sediment, they came across a mussel and said ‘This might be the federally endangered Snuffbox mussel. Let’s check it out,'” Koney said. “Indeed they found the Snuffbox mussel, which is really quite exciting because there aren’t too many around here.”

Koney says the scientists will work with U.S. Fish & Wildlife and Michigan EGLE to see what they have to do to preserve the mussels. She says they could end up naming a beer or something after the Snuffbox mussel once the development with restaurants and a hotel opens in 2025.
