Benton Harbor’s central dock is changing hands after 85 years. Jack Kinney has sold it to construction firm Reith-Riley, and the 80-year-old was mostly happy with the sale.

“This is kind of a tough thing on me to sell it, but I couldn’t be happier for the company I’m selling it to,” said Kinney.

Congressman Fred Upton says it’s a big deal.

“The significance of this is important,” said Upton. “Reith-Riley is one of the premier construction companies not only in the Midwest, but frankly in America. Their commitment to buy this land, to make sure they’ve got a resting spot for their sand and gravel and aggregate means they know the future is bright.”

The dock has not had any deliveries for several years, but that is changing next week. The first load of material for the US-31/I-94 connection project is set to arrive from Canada, and officials say a lot more is coming. The exact sales price was not disclosed.
