MI Congressman: More Testing Is Needed Before Colleges Reopen

Michigan Congressman Andy Levin says it won’t be safe to reopen colleges in the fall unless we do a lot more testing and contact tracing for COVID 19. Levin, who’s the vice chair of the House Committee on Education and Labor, says the mass outbreak of COVID-19 traced to a bar near MSU in East Lansing is a strong cautionary tale.

“The entire Lansing region has been moved back into the high risk category of our governor Gretchen Whitmer’s reopening plan, given the enormous impact of this outbreak,” Levin said. “This is over just an eight day period following that restaurant’s reopening.”

Levin says 27 of the cases were secondary infections of people who weren’t at the bar and that’s a situation that could play out with employees and others who work in college towns, in addition to affecting the students. The CDC director says the country only has about a quarter of the contract tracers it needs.
