The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal crash near Niles on Friday. It happened just before 11:40 a.m. on US-12 at the end of the off ramp from southbound US-31 in Bertrand Township. Sheriff’s deputies arrived to learn a pickup truck driven by 39-year-old Thomas Doyle of South Bend had been westbound on US-12 when it struck a vehicle that had just gotten off the US-31 bypass southbound. That vehicle was hit in the driver’s side door, and 24-year-old Anna Kim was killed in the crash. Kim was a graduate of Andrews University in Berrien Springs, and was originally from Korea. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department was able to notify her family of the crash with help from Andrews University and an interpreter. The sheriff’s department says Kim was in an internship with the Grand Rapids Symphony. It’s believed she may have pulled out into the path of the pickup truck.
