Electric Vehicles Mean New Techniques For First Responders

Snow covered, icy roads leads to more vehicle accidents and sometimes entrapment of drivers and passengers. With more hybrid and electric powered vehicles on the road, emergency responders have to know where to safely cut on a vehicle, so says South Haven Area Emergency Services Chief Ron Wise.

“Most of the electric vehicles, we have a concern when we’re doing extrication, when we’re in trying to cut the car apart,” Wise said. “We just have to be very cautious of what we’re cutting and sometimes we have to remove the plastic, interior pieces and all of that to make sure we’re not cutting a bright red or bright orange electric cord that’s high-voltage.”

Chief Wise told WSJM News that the department has apps for different makes of vehicles so they know how to attack a fire or where to cut to get a trapped victim out.
