Rep. Fred Upton and Dr. Matt Longjohn faced off for an hour long debate Monday simulcast on WKZO and WSJM.  This is the closest re-election race Upton has faced since winning his seat in Congress in 1986. Longjohn declared that Fred Upton has changed and is no longer a moderate Republican. He says it’s time for a new generation of congressional representation for the 6th district.

“I believe that Mr. Upton has changed, and no longer reflects the values of this community. And it’s time for a new generation of leader in Washington. One that won’t be beholden to corporate interests, special interests or party interests who demand a vote on particular issue no matter where else bipartisan efforts have moved forward.”

Upton says the economy and jobs have always been the most important thing and he says his votes have helped improve Michigan’s economy.

“As we think about where we’re headed Michigan right now is in a good place. We want to continue to see that happen. And I’m convinced that some for my votes in support of lower regulations and lower taxes has really helped the economy across southwest Michigan.”

The economy has improved lately. But according to Pew Research working family wages have stagnated for decades while corporations and the rich have benefited from labor productivity gains.
