Two long-time members of the St. Joseph Parks Advisory Board are being recognized for a quarter-century each on the panel. Mayor Mike Garey presented honorary street signs Monday night to Sylvia Lieberg and chairwoman Gloria Mance to honor their service. Mance talked about why she got involved.

“I never thought 25 years ago that I would be on here this long, but I joined because of the memorials on the bluff,” she said at this week’s city commission meeting. “We had some ups and downs, but we got what we wanted.”

One of Lieberg’s proudest accomplishments was pushing for the building of what is now the John and Dede Howard Ice Arena in the 1990s.

“I told them that outdoor skating rinks can be kept refrigerated with coils under the ice, and we should provide this activity in St. Joe during the mild winters,” said Lieberg.

Both have terms that expire November 1 of next year.
