It’s been a busy time at Benton Harbor Area Schools.

At Tuesday’s meeting, CEO Robert Herrera told the board of education about some of the things being done as the new school year gets underway. Among them are a couple of online learning programs to help students with credit recovery. Herrera told us this is the first year the district has applied for a state Seat Time Waiver to have online learning.

“It’s a very popular trend for students to become cyber school students or online students, and so we just wanted to offer the same service,” Herrera said.

Herrera says this will get the district in line with most others. Herrera also told us staffing remains a challenge, although the district has made 26 new hires, mostly teachers. Herrera said a goal is to provide better support to long-term substitutes through a program with Western Michigan University.
