Huron County officials are bracing for the seasonal surge of kayakers taking advantage of the north shore of Lake Huron for adventure. Sheriff Kelly Hanson tells Michigan News Network they’ve also handled a surge of rescue calls from kayakers not prepared for the dangers of kayaking on one of the Great Lakes.
“It’s not an inland lake, it’s not a river,” Hanson said. “Not that the inland lakes and the rivers don’t have dangers, but this one presents an even bigger one.”
Hanson says simply wearing a life jacket could have prevented many of the tragedies. Huron County is located at the tip of Michigan’s Thumb.
