South Haven’s seven beaches now have their safety flags flying. South Haven Area Emergency Services Fire Chief Ron Wise says the flags will be posted each day, rain or shine, at the beaches through September 15 to inform the public about Lake Michigan conditions. He says everyone needs to heed the red flags, in particular.
“Red means that there’s a very high chance for dangerous waves and currents, so there’s a very high probability that someone could get in trouble very quickly out on the water,” Wise told WSJM.
There will also be green and yellow flags to indicate the swimming conditions. The flags this year are rectangular, rather than pennant-shaped. Wise says the color of the flags will also be spelled out on them for the color blind, and the flag poles will be numbered so anyone calling 911 can more easily report their location.
