UPDATE — Gas Line Break Shuts Down Benton Harbor Walmart

There were no reported injuries, but the Benton Harbor Walmart was shut down Tuesday morning when a gas leak occurred. The Benton Township Fire Department says it all started around 10:30 am when an employee was driving a forklift at the back of the store and struck the main gas line into the building. That set off what firefighters called a “somewhat substantial” gas leak. The store was shut down, and everyone removed from the property. The fire department couldn’t get to the gas line they needed to shut if off, so Michigan Gas Utilities came to the scene and shut it off at the street. The store later reopened.
