Marcus Muhammad is now mayor of Benton Harbor after being sworn in at the end of last night’s city commission meeting. In his final statement as mayor, James Hightower wished Muhammad success, and reiterated he feels the city has improved since he took office. Hightower said he “just appreciates the opportunity to have served,” and added all he wanted to do was contribute and feels he’s done his best with that.

Muhammad defeated Hightower in November and challenged the former mayor in a recall election called off by the courts. City commissioners all delivered statements wishing the best of luck to both Muhammad and Hightower in their future efforts. The meeting had an extremely high turnout from citizens, something Commissioner Mary Alice Adams says she hopes to continue to see in the future. She says the city has plenty of boards which need representation and there is a lot of work to do in the city.
