Michigan Gas Utilities has a warning for those planning to do any kind of digging this summer. Spokesperson Nick Krzeminski says that, even if you’re just planting a garden, you should call Miss Dig first to make sure you’re not going to hit a gas line. Miss Dig will come out and plant colored flags to mark which kinds of utilities you have in the yard.

Every year, a gas line is hit by someone every six minutes nationally. Krzeminski says that Michigan Gas Utilities had to send crews out 200 times last year to fix lines that someone struck while digging.
