After four and a half years, Watervliet City Manager Tyler Dotson is moving on.

Dotson officially announced he will be stepping down from his position at the end of January to take a job as city manager in Hudsonville, Mich.

A native of South Haven, Dotson was hired by the City Commission in June 2018. His resignation is effective Jan. 31.

“Hands down, I’m going to miss the people,” Dotson said. “From the commissioners to the staff to the members of the community, I’ve developed some great relationships over my four and a half years here, and that’ll be the number one thing that I miss.”

During his time in Watervliet, Dotson has overseen many projects to improve the city: He said some things he is proud of include the completion of the South Watervliet Drain Project, securing a grant for the Elm Street improvements project, working with Cornerstone Alliance to help fund a new public space downtown and creating a new dog park for residents.

“Bringing the commission, the staff and the community together would be my proudest accomplishment,” Dotson said. “I’m also proud of our asset management in addressing our infrastructure – ensuring that the next generation has the water, sewer and storm systems that residents rely on for quality of life. We worked really hard in addressing some of those issues, and that’s something I know the city will continue to do after I leave.

Dotson – who was named to Moody on the Market’s 40 under 40 list in 2020 – said he is grateful for the opportunity Watervliet provided, and he is excited to take the next step forward in his career.

“I don’t think the community is going to miss a beat,” Dotson said. “I look forward to tracking their progress and being a friend to the community for years to come.”

Mayor Deah Muth said Dotson made a positive impact on our community during his time, and she is confident the city commission and staff will continue to build on recent progress.

Prior to its next regular meeting Jan. 10, the Watervliet City Commission will meet to discuss the next steps in replacing Dotson.
