A St. Joseph High School student is among 141 from across the country who have been named U.S. Presidential Scholars for 2015. He is Jesper Ke, who cites Dave Foster as his most influential teacher. Ke is one of just three students from Michigan on the list released by the White House. The others are from Rochester Hills and Troy. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in a statement the students are “poised to make their mark on our nation in every field imaginable.” He adds their academic and artistic achievements “reflect a sense of purpose that we should seek to instill in all students” to prepare them for life. More than 4,300 students qualified for the honor based on College Board SAT and ACT exams and through nominations made by Chief State School Officers or the National YoungArts Foundation’s nationwide YoungArts competition.

The honor does not include any financial or scholarship reward, as it is a recognition program. Students chosen as U.S. Presidential Scholars receive an expense-paid trip to Washington DC in June and the U.S. Presidential Scholars medallion at a ceremony sponsored by the White House. During the visit to Washington, they will have access to “important national and international figures, including government officials, educators, authors, musicians, scientists and other accomplished people.”
