Man Charged In Benton Harbor Shooting Death

A Benton Harbor man has been charged in the April shooting death of another Benton Harbor man. The Berrien County Prosecutor’s office tells WSJM News 30-year-old John Conyers was killed on April 7 of this year when he was shot outside of the Benton Harbor Salvation Army at 233 Michigan Avenue. Charged is 20-year-old Willie Deandre Hassel. The prosecutor tells us the incident leading to the shooting death of Conyers is believed to have involved the illegal sale of pills. Conyers was shot twice in the torso. At Hassel’s arraignment on Friday, bail was set at $700,000. He’s charged with open murder and could get up to life in prison. Hassel will next be in court on December 8.
