A Niles man remains in the Berrien County Jail with bond set at $1 million following the Sunday shooting death of his wife. The Berrien County Prosecutor’s office tells us 49-year-old John Lewis is charged with First Degree Premeditated Murder in the death of 55-year-old Carla Jean Lewis. Police were called to their Niles home Sunday evening when John Lewis reported his wife had been shot by two intruders. An autopsy performed on Monday found Carla Lewis had been shot five times, including once in the head. The prosecutor’s office is not releasing many details about the crime, other than to say a forensic examination of the crime scene determined John Lewis should be charged with murder. Lewis is also facing charges for violating the state’s medical marijuana law. Lewis will be back in court on August 23. If convicted, he faces life in prison.
