A Niles teen is among the winners of an international art contest being run by some transportation groups. The Michigan Department of Transportation’s Michael Frezell tells WSJM News International Aviation Art Contest invited kids between 6 and 17 to send in art inspired by the friendly skies. The goal is to keep young people interested in flying.

“We really need to inspire the next generation of pilots, managers, people into airplanes, and this also combines their creative talents and art work,” Frezell said.

The theme for the art contest was “Beyond the Clouds,” meaning organizers hoped to see images that involved things floating in the sky with clouds in the background. Around 120 Michigan entries were sent to MDOT, and 17-year-old Evan Robison, of Niles High School, came in second in his category. That means he’ll get to go on to Washington, D.C. for the national competition.
