New information coming from our reporting partners at WKZO radio in Kalamazoo that Larry Gordon, the man who shot and killed two bailiffs at the Berrien County Courthouse, was also a volunteer at his daughter’s elementary school. Watervliet Public Schools superintendent Kevin Schooley confirms they only do security screens using fingerprints for employees, and did not know of Gordon’s extensive criminal history.

“Unfortunately, the background check that I saw, I didn’t see any violent crime,” said Schooley. He adds the policy will change this fall. “I wish this wouldn’t have happened, but it did. My concentration is how to get better.”

Gordon apparently volunteered to help teachers during holiday parties at South Elementary school, where his daughter attended classes. He was killed by responding officers at the courthouse after he killed Joe Zangaro and Ron Kienzle last Monday. He was being led back to a holding cell after a court appearance. Gordon was being held on multiple charges, accused of keeping a teenage girl in a shed and keeping her high on meth so he could have sex with her.
