Snyder Signs “Unprecedented” $16.1 Billion Education Budget

Governor Rick Snyder has signed a $16.1 billion education budget, which includes an increase in per-student aid ranging from $60 to $120 to lower the gap between higher- and lower-funded school districts. he legislation approved Monday boosts state spending on K-12 schools by 1.9%.

Public universities’ aid will rise 2.9%. Funding for six of the 15 universities will remain below what it was before a major cut five years ago.
Snyder, who calls the education spending an “unprecedented investment,” signed the bill at Geisler Middle School in the Detroit suburb of Commerce Township. It includes $2.5 million to reimburse private schools for the cost of meeting state requirements such as immunization reporting and safety drills.Snyder is expected to sign another key budget bill later this week.
