UPDATE: Van Buren County Standoff Over

vanburenstandoff

It took allowing a Van Buren County man to talk to a sheriff’s deputy he knew to convince him to surrender during a lengthy standoff near South Haven. The 41-year-old man held Michigan State Police and the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department at bay for more than 15 hours Tuesday afternoon into early this morning after he fired a shot into the ground when a detective showed up to question him about alleged threats against an Allegan County elected official. The man surrendered at 1:42 a.m. today. During the standoff, he fired shots at police several times, and they returned fire. No one was hit. State Police are withholding his name until he’s arraigned.
