Schuitmaker Pleased With State Budget

The budget approved last week by the Michigan legislature is being called a good one by state Senator Tonya Schuitmaker. However, she adds she is a little disappointed lawmakers couldn’t find more money for higher education. Shuitmaker says she would not have supported a tax increase for that purpose, though, noting the spending plan does address other priorities.

“We pay down significant debts, we have more money going for K-12 education, increased services for Michigan’s children, public safety,” Schuitmaker said.

The $55 billion budget plan approved last week by the state legislature increases higher education funding by $40 million. It originally was to increase that funding by $60 million. Schuitmaker says she wanted the larger increase to make up for past higher education cuts.
