Van Buren Officials Reviewing FEMA Assessment Of Palisades Plan

A recent FEMA assessment of the Palisades nuclear power plant’s emergency response plan is under review by the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department. The federal agency recently held a series of drills, looking at how prepared plant staff and county agencies are for an emergency. Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Bob Kirk says there is minimal concern of something happening at Palisades. However, it’s still extremely important to have a plan. He says the FEMA assessment of the exercise was positive.

“Basically, they did not find any reason to be concerned with anything we have done,” Kirk told our reporting partners at WKZO.

Kirk is the Domestic Preparedness Coordinator for Van Buren County. He says despite the passing grade, the sheriff’s department will still review and update its response plans as needed.
