Study: Living Near The Ocean Reduces Stress

It turns out living by the ocean can help lower your stress level. That’s the conclusion of a new Michigan State University study. Study co-author Amber Pearson says it’s also better for your health to retire near an ocean.

“We also adjusted for age in our analysis, so the benefits should be seen by everyone,” Pearson said.

Pearson says the view of blue water was associated with lower levels of psychological stress. In fact, she’s found views of blue or green spaces, in general, are calming.

“The view of blue spaces was associated with lower levels of psychological distress,” Pearson said. “The theory here is that viewing blue or green spaces as a backdrop in contrast to an urban environment is actually calming.”

Pearson says she’s not sure the results would be the same for living by a lake. However, she would like to study that.
