From the Associated Press — Another feature is coming in a western Michigan community on city-owned land where a 48-foot cross once stood.
MLive.com reported Thursday that the Grand Haven City Council has voted 3-2 to add a yardarm to a flagpole on the Dewey Hill sand dune. Putting the horizontal bar on the structure’s top part is meant to turn it into what’s referred to as a maritime flagpole, and the yardarm will display more flags. The council voted last year to remove the cross from Dewey Hill. Council member Bob Monetza, who voted against adding the yardarm, said it is “a thinly veiled effort to add a city-owned cross on city-owned property.” Council member Dennis Scott disagreed with onetza, saying it has “nothing to do with religion.”
