Michigan State Police are working to identify the person killed in a Friday crash near Niles. Troopers were called to the scene at Briar Road east of Portage Road around 2:40 pm on a report of a westbound vehicle that crashed into a tree and caught on fire. The Bertrand and Niles Township Fire Departments responded to the scene and put the fire out, but troopers have been unable to determine the identity of the driver. They are now working with Berrien County Medical Examiner’s Office to get that information. Thecrash remains under investigation.
