Bill Would Take School Calendars Off The Negotiating Table

Should the school calendar be an item for collective bargaining agreement between teachers and school officials? It has been for years, but that would end, under a bill that cleared the Michigan House Education Committee this past week. Opponents of the bill say it negatively impacts local communities, especially when superintendents are not native to the area and are not familiar with local traditions. Committee Chair, House Republican Amanda Price of Ottawa County, supports the measure saying taking the calendar off the bargaining table benefits students.
