Weather Spotters Sought In Van Buren County

With the 2016 storm season soon to begin, the Van Buren County Sheriffs Department is looking for volunteers to be weather spotters. Lieutenant Bob Kirk says the spotters keep an eye on the sky and notify authorities when severe weather is approaching. Those who sign up are trained in the National Weather Service’s SkyWarn program.

“The National Weather Service, what they do is they come in and basically provide us with the basics of thunderstorm development, the fundamentals of storm structure, and then they also help you identify the potential severe weather features, and how to report the information,” Kirk told WSJM.

Kirk says anyone with an interest in public service is welcome to sign up. The SkyWarn training will be done in a single two-hour session next month. To find out more, contact the Van Buren County Sheriffs Department at 269-657-2006.
