SWM Residents Report Tax Scam

The Van Buren County Sheriffs Department is warning residents of a tax scam that it’s received several complaints about this week. The department says dispatch started getting calls Monday morning from residents who have been contacted either by phone or email by someone claiming to be an IRS agent. It notes these calls are false, adding anyone who gets such a call should report it to the IRS. The agency does not contact taxpayers demanding immediate payment over the phone for back taxes. You can report such calls to the IRS at https://www.irs.gov/uac/Report-Phishing.

Additionally, the Kent County Sheriff’s Department is reporting a lot of the same calls in the Grand Rapids area, and we have received them at our station office, as well. The Michigan Department of Treasury put out a warning recently about the scams, and they are urging people who receive the calls to contact police and not give out any personal information.
