270 days in jail, with the last 90 served at home. That’s the sentence for a Buchanan woman convicted of embezlling more than 75 thousand dollars from the Berrien County Sheriffs Department while she worked at the jail. 66 year old JoAnn Roberts was sentenced by Judge Scott Schofield Monday. She said she’s ashamed of what she did.
“I don’t know who that person was who did what they did,” Roberts said.
Prosecutors say Roberts stole money that was paid by criminal suspects for electronic tethers, and spent it at casinos. In addition to the jail time, she’ll serve five years probation, and pay 75 thousand dollars. She also has to stay away from casinos.
