Berrien Clerk Expects Slower Polls With No Straight Party Ticket Voting

Berrien County Clerk Sharon Tyler is among the clerks around the state expected election days to go a little less smoothly now that straight party ticket voting has been banned in Michigan. She says polling places may be backed up if voters can’t simply pick the straight party ticket, especially high profile elections, like next November’s.

“Because it’s a presidential election, in the November election, there will be more people out,” Tyler told WSJM.

Also, voters may be confused.

“It will probably create confusion because they will not know that the straight party ticket has been eliminated,” Tyler said. “So, they’ll be looking at that, not understanding.”

Tyler says election workers should be ready for a lot of voters with questions, and even ones who are upset because the lines are long. She doesn’t anticipate the upcoming primary to be a big problem, but is hope the legislature will allow no reason absentee voting to help alleviate the problem.
